The Last Unicorn

Poor Prince Lir! I thought his love for Amalthela was particularly tragic & as a child who grew up on prince stories, this was probably the first time I saw a story where the prince didn't necessarily win over the girl. He goes & slays dragons, adventures forth doing grand & heroic deeds & still Amalthea is not impressed. In fact, she doesn't even notice. Even still, he doesn't deny that he loves her & when he has a choice between his own life & giving her a chance to live, he doesn't hesitate to stand up to the Red Bull. That dynamic really left an impression on me & is much more true to life than the traditionally prince character. There's no amount of fancy gifts & heroic deeds that will compel love from another. In short, this is a lovely cel of Lir smiling beautifully & one I need to locate in the movie. I located this in the film; this is at the very end of Lir's confessional musical number to Amalthea. She ends up crying, saying she understands his love for her & he smiles 🙂 Love this movie!
