The Utena Movie! As a standalone movie, it really doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s so laden with metaphors that it can be difficult to make sense of even for people who love the series. Regardless, the visuals in this movie are absolutely stunning & unforgettable imo. Such lovely character revamps and so many rose petals!

I tried to place the cels in the order they appeared on film.

Utena Scowling

Saionji whips the last bit of bamboo broom that Utena has been using as a weapon out of her hands. Even now, completely disarmed, Utena grits her teeth and prepares to charge Saionji, whose sword is raised, ready to strike!

Grrr! I love the vivid colors in this cel! This scene is a pretty short one immediately before Anthy gives Utena the sword of Dios.

Another interesting thing to note about this and other movie cels is the smaller area where the artists painted on the cels. It seems like they really cut it close by painting only the area that was exactly in frame. Even some of the TV cels give themselves more lee-way about what will or will not actually be on camera on their peripherals.

*Sigh* This big, beautiful, full frame portrait cel really makes me miss Anime Taro/Museum...
