The Utena Movie! As a standalone movie, it really doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s so laden with metaphors that it can be difficult to make sense of even for people who love the series. Regardless, the visuals in this movie are absolutely stunning & unforgettable imo. Such lovely character revamps and so many rose petals!

Utena ascends a staircase to a rose garden suspended in midair. She is staring off in the distance on the edge of the rose garden, turning when she hears a voice...

I LOVE this whole cut, when Utena is first introduced to Anthy. Utena is turning around & seeing Anthy for the very first time. Her expression is just perfect for this scene.

The image of Utena is relatively small on the acetate, but, as most of the movie cels, they blow up the image on screen.
