Anthy was a character that confused the hell out of me the first time I watched Utena. At the time, I connected deeply with Utena & probably as a consequence, I didn’t like Anthy very much. However, I saw a completely different, deeper, scarier character the next time I watched the series that absolutely fascinated me; each time I see it, I see more of her influence. She is one of those characters that has continued to mesmerize me & one that inspires so much compassion.

She is my favorite character from Utena & probably my favorite character in anime; I am always looking for nice or unusual cels of her.

Party Dress Pan - Ep3

Wow! A pan cel of Anthy in the green party dress! I was so pumped when I saw this cel come up for auction. Imagine my disappointment when I thought it might be a fancel after reviewing the screencaps; Anthy's leg is not exposed in the actual anime. The auction picture wasn't the best, so it was rather hard to tell.

However, I am happy to report that this is the actual pancel used in Episode three. You can probably see the paint loss from the correction layer on the cel. Plus, when looking at an artbook image of the cel, you can actually see that the area where Anthy's leg is exposed in this cel appears different.

I tried to capture most of the image on this large piece of acetate - the cel itself is about 11 & 1/2 inches wide & 18 inches tall, a challenge for my little 8 x 12 scanner.

Regardless, this is a special image for me - the damsel in distress! Utena cannot resist rushing to her rescue! Not that we would have it any other way 🙂
