I never thought that I would be much of a sketch collector. After all, Utena actually has cels! However, the more that I have collected, the more I am able to see the whole animation process & the work that went into making cels & the anime. It’s pretty fascinating!

These are various sketches from the TV show for which I do not have corresponding cels. I tried to place these in the order that they appear in the series.

Utena Sequence - Ep12

Utena: "I'm sorry, Wakaba...It's just like you said, isn't it? This isn't me. I'm going to take back my normal self."

Utena glances up at Wakaba, finally smiling again as she realizes she knows who she is and what she wants.

This is such a sweet scene; Utena finally realizes what is normal for other people does not work for her; she just needed Wakaba to help point that out 🙂 When I bought this, I really had no idea how rare full sequence of sketches from this series are, nor exactly how many sketches were in the packet or what this would be. In fact, this was only the second sketch set I bought, having unconsciously decided previously that I wasn't really interested in paper materials from Utena. Seeing this all together when it arrived was a real eye opener about the animation process and I became fascinated about the process behind cel production. Needless to say, this set is pretty special to me 🙂
